Check out Frank from the Tribute wailing on Eddie Cochran’s (Montrose) Twenty Flight Rock!
Last night I saw the “Official” Ronnie Montrose Tribute at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. The night starts with Neal Schon doing some Montrose solo stuff specifically “Town Without Pity” with former Journey drummer and one time Montrose solo tour drummer, Steve Smith. Beautiful tribute by those guys. Next up Gamma comes out with the original guys and Marc Bonilla. Carmassi is GREAT on drums and Davey Pattison is in great voice. Marc Bonilla did a beautiful job of trying to fill Ronnie’s GIANT shoes. Gamma was really cool and Voyager was the hightlight ! Next comes what we all waited for! The original Montrose band with Joe Satriani. Sammy is pumped and in great voice! Bill Church is clearly the most spiritually touched by the event and great on bass. Carmassi is just a badass. For as great as I know Satriani is he left me wanting to be kind. The original lineup part overall was great! Sammy had previously claimed they were going to play the entire first album, but left a few songs out for what I would realize would be Allstars to play. Next there seemed to be some confusion which took away from some performances that were good, but the music was obscure. During the last portion of the show in fairness to me the announcer just reads a bunch of names and guys come out and jam. A cool blues/slide version of Spaceage Sacrifice helped get the show going again. At this point they call it “Allstars” and again read off a bunch of names and aren’t specific enough for me to tell who is who name wise. This is what brought me to this website and review. A blonde haired slightly husky looking guitarist comes out and I’m telling you played the hell out of every Montrose tune he was on and one Tesla song. This guy after searching the web turns out to be Frank Hannon! Out of all the guitar players on stage last night, Frank Hannon by FAR played every Montrose note like the spirit of Ronnie is in his body! I’m saying this because before last night I never knew who Frank Hannon was and after last night I’ll never forget what he did! I will also add that Tommy Thayer played the hell out of “I Got The Fire” and tried his best on “Free Ride” but was faltering a bit and right in the middle of the faltering the guitar starts to sound RIGHT again and as I watched I see back in the shadows Frank Hannon is cleaning the song up to perfection (bailing out/rescuing/fixing) Tommy and “Free Ride”! They announce that “Frankenstein” is the last song and Jeff Watson comes out and once again Frank Hannon amazes with his Montrose virtuosity! I had a few first Montrose albums on vinyl and wore them out. I saw Ronnie twice when the Best of came out on Rhino and recognized a singer and bass player from then last night. He ended those shows with the Who(s) My Generation! Sorry for being so long winded, but when HDNET airs the show hopefully this summer and the DVD comes out see for yourself the incredible job Frank Hannon does!
